When all your friends are on drugs, it isn’t easy to stay sober. To have a social life in sobriety, Steve needed to put in some work.
Even after putting down the drugs and alcohol, I just didn’t feel right. My problem was spiritual in nature, and I needed to address it if I wanted to stay sober.
Turns out, inpatient treatment isn’t a magical cure for all the problems related to addiction. Sure, it got me sober. But I still had to learn how to live my life on the outside.
I spent a long time feeling sorry for myself that I had the disease of addiction while others didn’t. Self-pity did not help me stay sober. If I wanted to stay in recovery, I needed to change my perspective and learn to be of service to others.
It’s not easy to stay sober when all your friends are drug addicts. The people around you can make all the difference.
